Als afsluiting van het A1 weekend voor degenen die er zondag bij waren, en speciaal voor de idioten die tot het bittere einde bleven, een stukje uit een column van Ben Edwards. Edwards is A1 commentator en schrijver van een blog op de officiële A1 website. In zijn column 'the definition of a hero' verhaalt hij eerst over Earl Bamber, de 18-jarige rijder uit Nieuw-Zeeland. Hij debuteerde op Zandvoort, en dat in een auto die het dubbele aantal PK's had dan hij gewoon was onder de kap te hebben. Helemaal mee eens, Bamber wist de black beauty in de stromende regen naar een hele mooie tweede en derde plek te sturen (met dank ook voor de nieuwe header van dit blog). Edwards schrijft verder over het begrip 'hero' nog, en ik laat het vertalen aan jullie over:
"But there can be another definition of the term; to go above and beyond the call of duty and there were many people who lived up to that description in the Netherlands, and lots of them were dressed in Orange. Ladies and Gentlemen of the sand dunes, I take my hat off to you (and when you consider how firmly it is normally clamped on my head, that's quite something). The dedication of the Dutch racing fan is a marvel to behold, and as our TV cameras scanned the crowd and picked out even more enterprising ways of trying to keep the worst of the rain at bay, we could only shake our head and wonder.
France's Loic Duval, winner of the Feature race, mentioned it in the press conference afterwards. In essence he said: "You're crazy but you're wonderful," and that it meant a huge amount to the drivers to have that level of support around the circuit".
Kijk, hebben we er toch niet voor niks voor gek bijgezeten....
